Us: Plot Synopsis
Us follows the story of Adelaide Wilson, who, along with the rest of her family return to her childhood beach home for a vacation. Adelaide is haunted by nightmares from her youth and she gets increasingly worried that something bad is about to happen to her family. These fears quickly become a reality when four Doppelgangers descend upon her home one night and throughout the film, they do their best to terrorise the family whilst the family try and get to the bottom of the mystery of who they are.
Adelaide’s Doppelganger is the leader and she uses the rest of the Tethered to separate the family and spread them out which involves several different scenarios and eventually leads to them discovering that everyone has a shadow version of themselves. These shadow people, know as the tethered, live underground, eat rabbits and mirror the movements of those on the surface.
It’s stated in the film that The Tethered may be part of a government experiment and whilst it’s not detailed this ties into the overall message of the film which I’ll go into later. They have been put in place to attempt to reverse the control that those who live above have over them and instead allow for the tethered to control the people on the surface.
We learn that The Tethered have come to kill their opposites and unite and to show themselves to the world.
Us: Ending Explained
Throughout the film, we learn of Adelaide’s childhood, including a time when she was at a carnival with her parents and after wandering into a hall of mirrors, she witnesses a mirror version of herself that is a completely different person. This opens the movie but we learn a lot more of this backstory as the film goes on. It turns out that the beach house is in the same location that the carnival was that she visited as a child and the trauma that she experienced there has come back in full force.
Though the family manages to kill some of The Tethered, upon returning to the beach the next day they see many of them holding hands as a symbol of their union and show that this is Us. Adelaide’s doppelganger manages to kidnap Adelaide’s son and descends into the subsurface world. Adelaide follows her through the hall of mirrors from her childhood in which there was a doorway and we learn the truth behind the movie.
It turns out that Adelaide’s doppelganger planned the entire thing and has been waiting for 30 years to spring her trap. It appears that Adelaide manages to kill her Doppelganger and rescue her son, however, we learn that when Adelaide originally met her Doppelganger in the hall of mirrors, they actually switched places.
This is why Adelaide is the only member of The Tethered that is able to speak and this explains her quest for revenge. The Doppelganger upon reaching the surface as a child was able to adjust over time to normal life but it still has traumatic memories of this part of its life. The real Adelaide has been the one trapped underground and this drive to need to return to the surface is why she began attempting to command the army of Doppelgangers.
The twist feels like it was ripped straight out of the Goosebumps book: Let’s get invisible and those who remember that episode will of course see a lot of similarities here.
The Tethered Explained
Jordan Peele when speaking frankly about the creatures stated the following:
“We’re our own worst enemy, and that idea created this monster, The Tethered. I wanted to forge this new mythology that explored

Ok so what I got from it was that they did get switched but u could already know that by the way the one with the normal family was acting. One when the little girls opposite got thrown into the trees alita went to go to her not to see if she was dead but to day good bye. Second is when the little boy walked into the fire she didn't want him to when he was trying to kill them.

Fuck jordan peele and his i wont cast white people in lead roles bullshit. "This isnt a anti-america hate rant"? Hollywood is full of left wing extremists that despise america. Most of these idiots live in their elite bubble and are out of touch with normal everyday americans. Notice how he said the invader coming to kill us or take our jobs. That is a jab at trump and trump supporters. Didn't hear him mention anything about the repeated nonsense that comes from the left. I won't ever pay to see a jordan peele movie.

There is so much religious symbolism in this movie. For example: Her kids: Her girl is named Zara. Her alternate is Umbrae. Zora : the dawn Umbrae: darkness of a shadow Her son Jason Jason: healer Pluto: god of the dead This is all to connote the devil. Hell is invading heaven. This is why they are in red. This movie as to do a lot with the use of the religious symbolism. These are little miracles, that God is giving people like the 11:11 . The devils side( the red) is aware of this reality- that’s why she says- do you ever notice little things that happen? It’s because they’re small miracles. She’s aware of this fact because she is from hell originally. Think back to the alarm clock, the jealously of the alternative side(as if to see heaven from hell but not be able to experience it), and the frisbee landing perfectly on the beach towel spot on the beach. God is condemning humans because humanity was able to replicate people with no soul. “Doing gods work”. The bunnies are the line the government crosses. But the government clones rabbits- but never humans. She never said she was a clone. Why even have the copying of every hand motion in the light with the little ones then? Why did the girl who realized she was in hell dance in the light when everyone else remained in the dark? She realized she was chosen to accept God. And if they are clones, why the golden scissors? Gold is given by god to take vengeance on heaven because people take it for granted. Our reality is heaven. That’s why she’s laughing when she says “You think we want your money?” Because they couldn’t care about the outside world. They were in hell because they lack a soul. It’s hell invading heaven by gods wrath. That’s why they are so obsessed with only killing copies themselves- not really anyone else because for so long they have mirrored to heaven while experiencing hell via divine intervention. Take for instance when we see the white neighbors walk down the staircase approaching the black father who is hobbling down.. it’s one trying to mirror a reality that he doesn’t know. That he’s only seen. One of wealth and power. He wants to rub his money in peoples faces. People like our black father. He’s bad at fitting in however and the black father kills him out of fear of what he saw before. The white wife also is sad when she sees her husband being killed. But is happy to see him dead is in the end because she wanted to be rid of him. Take for instance the fact we don’t see the white man being killed. It’s meant to be sad... from the perspective of the wife. But she’s insane and deranged and try’s to kill everyone for her family. They are only aggressive when we are aggressive. They also only care about each other’s mirrors version. In the end. It is the tortured souls of hell coming out into heaven to enjoy and praise god because she has given them the gift of heaven. We are god watching the whole movie as events unfold. Come find me Hollywood.

Alright somebody answer this cause I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it. 2 things. When the real ade was dragged to the bunk and handcuffed, how did she get out of them without help if the clones she’s surrounded by are basically vegetables? Number 2, once she was out of the handcuffs, why devise a plan and wait 30 years to execute it? Meaning she must’ve known how to get out for a long period of time since she was able to guide the clones to surface and instead of just leaving she stays and accepts eating raw rabbit with clones? Why do that if in the movie there’s no sign indicating an issue with leaving the tunnels. Also if the escalator only goes down to get to the tunnels, how did the duplicate ade get to the surface if not run up them? And what about the clones? Are there different exits throughout the tunnels or did all 7 billion run up that one escalator🤔🤔🤔

My theory is that there were more clones that switched out their people because the mirror house is pretty much the center spot that is made for this too have happened. Others who went into the mirror house may have been switched which no one could know because of course they wouldn’t say anything about it just like adalades clone

My interpretation of the film is that for starters "Us" = United States The film delves deeply into the subject of what analytical psychologist Carl Jung called the Shadow of the self. Emotions like envy and jealousy can lead any individual toward proclivities of illogical and violent tendencies. It is about how the downtrodden members of society and that collective mentality of oppression can lead toward irrational and vehement projection which in turn leads to violence. The red jumpsuit can be interpreted as the "custodian" or lower class, and the red color (often associated with evil; the devil) in symbolism rising from the unconscious (the tunnels) to reek havoc on the surface shine of existence. Though out the film this theme is expressed. The father even expresses this when he is upset with his rich friend for having nicer things. Even the evil half (Good half in actuality- but shows that this envy is fluid) of Lupita expresses feelings of anger at what she was dealt in life. The last thing she watches on TV is an ideologue represented as 'Hands Across America" which was a simplistic organized benefit to assist those in poverty. In youth causes such as this may have resonated with her through her life in the tunnels as a symbolic panacea. Another thing to notice is that for Hands Across America people had to donated $10 to reserve a place in line. Now put this in line with the song that is the theme song of the film - "I Got 5 on it" The title is a phrase meaning to pay half of a dime bag (a $10 bag of cannabis) with another person. “Kinda broke so ya know all I gots five, I got five” “Unless you pull out the fat, crispy five dollar bill on the real before its history” “I got 5 on it, let's go half on a sack” Now this song connotates that one half of the majority is going to be represented in that protest and negate and excise the other half. The scissors were used as a metaphor to cut the tether, or to sever any sort of connection with those who are not oppressed. It is a very frightening metaphor about how the path to hell is paved with good intentions. There a lot more symbolism in film but I will hold on that until I watch it a second time.

First they can't share a soul they were cloned...the kids were not switched the fake mom had kids from a real dad(how i don't know clones don't have kids) anyway if she did have kids they wouldn't have a soul. Second the girl was more connected to the father and son to the mother(maybe they were more doppelganger then the daughter) son looked at mom crazy when she killed the twin doppelganger because they are doppelganger also....looked at her crazy out of the locker wasn't sure was that his mother....the doppelganger mother showed compassion for the doppelganger kids whe they died because they were doppelganger and she had that connection to them because of that and look lime her kids....my problem where are the scientists the guards why was she the onlu one to get out why wait 30 years to come out.....doppelganger mom didn't want to go back to the beach and scared for her son when she couldn't find him at the beach afraid they were going to get switched back down to the cloning center....little girl doppelganger could have damaged the girls throat when she choked her so she couldn't scream that's one reason she had trouble talking plus 30 years of no communication in english and learning how to communicate to the doppelgangers ....the 2 boys had a connection i believe because the normal face son was more of a doppelganger then his sister(remember she said the first child came out perfect more of her father's seed thats why they were more close and the mom and son were close).....they letting you know all these tunnels they have thats where they running these experiments I know people thats raising cloned pigs and cattle so just be careful what you eat(can't tell you what to look for to distinguish the two)...and letting you know that there are cloned people out there as well....look up people having glitches on UA-stream....thats all for now i have to watch it again to see what i missed....stay blessed

+deffinition I think the shadow doubles are the shadow side of human. Our negative potential. Everyone has a double because everyone has a shadow side as in negative potential. We have to outweigh it by fulfilling our positive potential and defeat our shadow. The woman of the other family didn't have any character and was only about looks and his husbands money, she couldn't kill anyone, wanted to hurt herself and both the real self and the shadow self were desperate when their husbands died. The husband was a materialistic business guy who was not in touch with his masculine side and had no real love towards his family so they were destroyed by their shadow in a heartbeat. The real adelaide died i think because of her tendency towards grandiosity. She played around with the tethered self at the end and wanted to show how she is more powerful and that's the reason she died. The daughter had to run away from her shadow but her shadow caught her because she had a negative attitude towards running as in even though she wants to do it she was being lazy about it.

The ending was good, except for one part that I just dont understand and doesnt make sense from a story perspective. I really like the whole switch thing in the end, however it didnt make sense at all. If they switched places, what was the point of the "tethered" Ade to give that story about the shadow (being herself) and the princess (being regular Ade). Also while they were alone, wouldnt Tethered Ade have said something? Atleast about them switching places? But, she didnt. Also, the fact that she made that whole scene about dancing and how real Ade is the reason she started dancing in the first place, if they switched places, would she be forced to become the shadow? Is that how that works? I dont think so. It just felt like a very forced thing to throw into the end, and didnt make much sense. I thought it wouldve been better without the switcharoo, and the tethered Ade ends up winning the last fight. As from her perspective she was the underdog, and from her perspective she was a hero, much like how media can portray things differently than they are, we were in fact cheering for the wrong people. The tethered were the underdogs and the ones who were treated unfairly/unjustly.

My other take away from this movie is that we have to destroy the evil part of ourselves; that part of us that causes us to self-sabbotage. There's a constant battle between good and evil raging inside us and if we just suppress the evil, rather than destroying it completely it always comes back to haunt us. We must confront the wicked side and totally annihilate it in order to have true peace in our lives. Although the fake Adelaide chained up the real one 30 years prior, that was not enough because we notice that fake Adelaide was constantly living in fear. Had she killed her back then, there would be no fear. In any case, both Adelaides are versions of the same person so she was really fighting with herself.

Vibes I picked up during and by the end the movie 1. The people playing rock paper scissors in the beginning always landed on scissors 2. The mom couldn't relate to her family and I really thought that she might have been the clone because she couldn't talk anymore as a kid. 3. When the son was on the beach and saw the man standing still I didn't know who it was, but the moment the family showed up I realized it was the homeless man and his dopple killed him earlier the day. 4. The son was able to control his other half because the son is the offspring of a tethered (and the other half is the offspring of a human) 5. The scissors cutting the thread was a callback to Greek mythology where your thread would be cut when it was your time to die. 6. I can't wait to see who the "them" are. Why are humans always trying to play God and create new ways to create life??? 7. The biggest plothole in the entire movie: how did scientist clone people? How did scientist reproduce nearly 100,000 people (or more) over 30years and at what point did they start??? The tethered didn't just exist from the beginning...so did the scientist steal a bunch of blood samples from pregnant mother's and clone the fetus???

Jordan Peeles reasoning behind the film makes me see why Jeremiah 11:11 was a theme: “Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them”. (KJV version) That evil were always looking to blame on someone , or that evil “other” could just be within us, as Peele mentions. That’s why when the the Bible verse says though they shall cry , “ [God] will not hearken...” , this evil is just a reflection of ourselves. You can’t escape it, we must be the ones to solve it ourselves instead of looking to point the finger. Remember when Jason said something along the lines of “hey, when you point one finger, 3 point back at you?” Peele is great at making horror , social commentaries.

All these people are tethered via soul, to the point where their every action is mimicked on the surface, yet they never learn to speak? But also they're able to comprehend deeply symbolic murder weapons and perform far above average feats of athleticism and precision, while intentionally acting in a way to instill terror in their victims? But also they're so batshit-crazy they're barely able to function around each other?

As far as I could tell there was no evidence that Adelaide was "special", she described her and her other as so but in reality it could have simply been a chance encounter, a planets-aligning moment, right place right time, to which she attributed greater meaning after the fact. Nothing that Adelaide did seem to show any greater "psychic" ability than any other tether. I think there's a theme of socialization that a lot of people are leaving out, if you can gloss over the fact that a very young girl had the presence of mind to strangle and kidnap her copy within one moment seeing her for the first time, now you have to acknowledge that being young children the one that was transferred into a normal environment became normal and the one that was transferred into a horrible environment became horrible. One theme of the movie seems to be, may be unintentionally, that people socialized in a horrible environment are horrible. Most positive spin I can put on it is that people with better genes in a horrible environment are better horrible people, and people with not so good genes in a good environment are not so good good people.

For all you KNOWLEDGEABLE movie-goers out there, THERE IS ONE MAJOR FLAW IN THIS MOVIE. Please enlighten me. (Movie is still amazing lol I just know this cant be right). I think i've grasped EVERYTHING there is to grasp (for now) about this movie. Despite all the illogical things like how did all the tetherds get matching suits, scissors, gloves and shoes or how they were creating in the first place, as a fan of the message and the uniqueness of this movie I choose to look over these things. A bad tomato doesnt ruin an entire burger if you choose to overlook it. The switch is the switch. It DEFINITELY HAPPENED. Thus, HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT CLONED ADDY WOULD HAVE ANY RECOLLECTION OF HER EVENTS LEADING UP TO AND INSIDE THE HALL OF MIRRORS BEFORE THE SWITCH OCCURRED. They mimic movements and experiences, but they dont share a soul and thus do not share memories. THERE IS NO LOGICAL WAY CLONED ADDY COULD TELL HER HUSBAND ANYTHING ABOUT THAT EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO THAT SWITCH, but in the bedroom after she says goodnight to her son, she proceeds to do so. How sway?! Point being, I get Peele wanted the twist to work out, and in its own way, it defeinitely did. But after overlooking all of the illogical events that occur in this movie because I dont think it ruins what the movie actually is, I cant get myself to overlook the directing/editing flaw he made which I think he did on purpose because he knew if he did it logically, we would have found out right away. I love this movie, especially upon second watching. I hate to even nit pick like this, but after lacking the explanation of such irrational things like how the births were exactly matched, the equipment, their creation and the list goes on, I think its fair to say what I have pointed out as a directing flaw is absolutely so. Otherwise, Movie is a top teir watch.

I sort of have this theory, when Red was explaining to Adelaide that the clones don't have souls, they (the tethered) could create one when above ground which would explain Adelaide actions, falling in love, having kids, etc. I mean even though we don't find out till the end that Adelaide is the clone, it sorta explains why she didn't just copy what others were saying or doing, she was starting to become human in a way. I hope this makes sense.

I might be off but here goes. I feel like at the very beginning of the movie there was a commercial playing showing ppl holding hands.. hands across america (Map). These Rabbits are clones as are the people in the (red suits) the red suits refers back to the red paper cut out that we see in the commercial. The subliminall message is that tge government has has an agenda to create a copy of all ppl and Knew of the take over in the future. Remember the commercial aried in 1986.. If you believe in conspriacies this isnt far fetched. The boy and mother are the tethers because the boy has been weird the whole movie. 1. The black boy coudnt snap on beat 2. He could ignite a lighter 2. He leaves the Ocean to pee. Theres are countless things you can catch. The more you watch the more things you pick up.

So the little boy never tried to kill himself. She never really tried to kill herself either. When they’re in the living room she breaks the whole family up but the little boy is the last one who leaves and she doesn’t tell him to kill him she says “go play” and they actually do go play. When they’re in the closet playing with the fire the little boy match finally works but the “clone” gets scared and flinches as the boy escapes. When the white lady clone didn’t kill the main lady it was because she knew who she was

This isn't a necessarily in depth interpretation. There is a reason that Jordan Peele made the oppressed the antagonists. When addressing the duality of man, the film makes a statement in saying that life isn't binary; the situation isn't as black and white as it appears. The clone of Adelaide created this whole situation, but only the original would have noticed the situation below and actually decide that the best way to solve the issue is to kill everyone. I understand the original was exposed to traumatic experiences, but serial killers have tragic pasts as well, yet it's not an excuse for their actions. You are sympathetic to the original's cause, but it's ultimately wrong. When they say that there is only one soul, only the clone actually developed a life above ground. If the clone had stayed below, who knows what the original Adelaide could've been capable of if trauma caused her mental state to regress completely. The biblical verse says that it was ultimately destiny by God that the event would occur, meaning that while the clone is responsible for kidnapping Adelaide original, Adelaide original was the antagonist anyways. There was no changing that, the clone's soul wasn't full of hatred like the original's. That's why it's not black and white, so while yes it can mirror BLM, for example, it's statement is that to unite we can't go and metaphorically kill each other, because both sides r to blame. The film is a statement saying that we're one in the same and one being superior to the other only brings about the problem.

So the hands across America thing: When Adelaide was a child, (before she got switched) she saw a commercial referencing the hands across america. I think it's something that inspired her, so it stuck with her for a while. So when she got switched, and when she was in the underground area she wanted revenge. So she wanted to show the people above a sign, since it was the only thing she remembered from the above world, so that's why everyone is holding hands across america because it's the only thing she remembered.
